Set on five private acres in Malibu, this once-neglected bungalow was transformed into a serene, single-level residence conceived around art, nature, and the restorative qualities of coastal California living.
The architectural expansion introduced two soaring wings containing a new kitchen and private office, along with a sculptural rotunda that creates a gracious sense of arrival. Tower Design comprehensively renovated the original interior, establishing a more fluid relationship among the home’s architecture, significant art collection, and beautifully landscaped outdoor living spaces.
The clients’ extensive collection of Asian and Inuit art became integral to the design from the outset. Every room was considered in relation to individual works, with sightlines, scale, lighting, and materials carefully composed to give each piece presence. Custom plaster walls provide a quiet, tactile backdrop, while vintage furnishings, collected textiles, and Asian antiques lend depth, provenance, and an atmosphere of cultivated ease.
At the center of the residence, a courtyard with a waterfall and reflecting pond brings the sound, movement, and tranquility of water into daily life. The courtyard acts as both a visual focal point and a contemplative sanctuary, reinforcing the home’s seamless connection to its natural surroundings.
The pool, lounge areas, and gardens were designed as extensions of the interiors rather than separate exterior amenities. A consistent material language and carefully framed views allow the residence to unfold naturally from sheltered rooms to open-air living, creating an effortless setting for private retreat and intimate entertaining.
