Tower Design transformed this 1950s neoclassical residence in Beverly Hills’ celebrated Trousdale Estates, refining its ornate architectural language while honoring the glamour and provenance of the original home.
Wall-to-wall carpeting was removed, along with faux-marble and heavily gilded finishes that had obscured the architecture. Large-format Thassos marble flooring introduced clarity, continuity, and a sense of permanence, while a luminous white palette created a restrained backdrop for modern furnishings, important vintage pieces, and moments of vivid color. The exterior living areas were similarly simplified, establishing a more cohesive relationship between the house and its surroundings.
At the center of the dining room is a singular custom table conceived and drawn by Kathleen McMullen. Its top was handcrafted in Florence using the centuries-old Italian pietra dura technique. A pair of back-to-back lion sculptures, sourced as garden statuary and gilded by artisans in Salt Lake City, forms its sculptural base. Vintage dining chairs acquired at auction were restored and gilded in Santa Barbara, then upholstered in zebra hide to create an unexpected dialogue between classical ornament and modern audacity.
Throughout the home, carefully selected brass and gilded elements—including a vintage etched-brass cocktail table by Armand Jonckers and a custom brass bar-table base—reinterpret the residence’s neoclassical character with greater restraint. Mid-century furnishings acknowledge the home’s original era while lending comfort, scale, and ease to rooms designed for the clients’ frequent entertaining.
